Review: Steel Construction Forum, 13.03.2020

The STEEL CONSTRUCTION FORUM 2020 held on 13.03.2020 again met with great interest. Thus, KIT Steel and Lightweight Construction together with the co-organizers bauforumstahl e.V., DVS e.V., VBI, VPI, and FOSTA welcomed considerably more than 100 interested parties. At the beginning Dr. Ruff informed the participants within the current half-hour about current developments on the topics "MVV-TB" as well as "EN 1090" - especially with regard to the situation in steel construction. The following presentation by Mr. Kasper (KIT) dealt with the reinforcement of steel components by glued-on CFRP lamellas under loads that are not predominantly static. After the coffee break, which was used for extensive communication, Prof. Ummenhofer (KIT) gave an insight into the new DASt guideline 026 "Lifetime extension by hammering". Afterwards Prof. Ummenhofer presented the results of the measurement and simulation technical support of the recently completed upgrading of the Rhine bridge Maxau. The real fire resistance of sandwich elements in comparison to the currently valid regulations was highlighted in the lecture of Mr. Schmied (KIT). The lecture event was rounded off by Mr. Lehmann (Jakob AG), who presented building with rope nets. We would like to thank all supporters, participants, lecturers and helpers of the event and are already looking forward to continuing the event in spring 2021 - on 12.03.2021.

Review: Steel Construction Forum 2019, 15.03.2019

With more than 120 participants, the STEEL CONSTRUCTION FORUM 2019, organized by KIT Steel and Lightweight Construction on March 15, 2019, met with great interest. Also thanks to the co-organizers bauforumstahl e.V., DVS e.V., VBI, VPI and FOSTA a varied program could be presented. During the current half-hour Dr. Ruff (KIT) informed those present about new developments in the field of certification of building products. The following lecture by Prof. Stranghöner (University of Duisburg-Essen) dealt with the possibilities of the execution of screw connections in steel construction. Mrs. Bräutigam (KIT) then presented first results of a research project dealing with the connection of solid wall masts by means of push-fit joints.

Prof. Schuler (Munich University of Applied Sciences) gave an insight into the development of bonded all-glass constructions after the coffee break and illustrated the challenges with numerous practical examples. Estimating the service life of repair-welded, fatigue-stressed constructions is the subject of a research project presented by Mr. Ladendorf (KIT). The event was rounded off by Dr. Morgen (WTM Engineers), who reported on the planning and construction of the Butterfly Bridge in Copenhagen. We would like to thank all participants, partners, speakers and helpers of the event and are already looking forward to a continuation of the event on March 13th, 2020.

Accreditation as test laboratory, 08.02.2019

KIT Stahl- und Leichtbau, Versuchsanstalt für Stahl, Holz und Steine receives confirmation from the "Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH" (DAkkS) that the testing laboratory has the competence according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 to perform tests in the following areas: non-destructive tests, mechanical-technological tests, coating tests, and tests on fire behavior in steel and lightweight construction. Details can be found in the certificate with the registration number D-PL-11068-01-00. [Download]

21st technical discussion of the PÜZ offices, 25.09.2018

The 21st technical discussion (exchange of experience) of the notified testing, inspection and certification bodies for the verifications in the sense of the Building Regulation List A for construction products according to BRL A clauses 4.1 to 4.10 as well as according to BauPVO, article 55 for construction products from the SG17 area will take place on 25.09.2018.

Renewal and extension of the equipment in the field of corrosion testing, 01.08.2018

The possibilities for carrying out tests in the field of corrosion protection have been successively expanded at the research institute over the past ten years. New corrosion equipment has been purchased and put into operation in order to be able to carry out the testing tasks for our customers quickly and reliably in future. The new equipment includes a system for cyclical corrosion tests. Among other things, the equipment can be used for salt spray testing in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9227 and DIN EN 13523-8, tests in a humid atmosphere in accordance with DIN EN ISO 6270 Parts 1 and 2 and DIN EN 13523-26. A further equipment was purchased for testing in a humid atmosphere containing sulphur dioxide. Besides the tests according to DIN 50018 and DIN EN ISO 6988, this can also be used for tests according to DIN EN ISO 6270 Part 2. To test the UV resistance, a further cyclic system for tests with UV-A and UV-B radiation with or without irrigation and humid atmosphere was put into operation.

EPAQ certificate, 13.06.2018

The Research Institute for Steel, Wood and Stone has been a competent partner of the "European Association for Panels and Profiles" for many years. The current certificate as an independent institution for the testing and monitoring of sandwich panels and trapezoidal profiles can be found here. [Download]

Student building competition, 13.12.2017

The theme of the student building competition in 2017 is the design of the structural framework and the construction of the model of an angled cantilever beam for an exposed skywalk on the top floor of a high-rise building. The skywalk is to be designed as a light, spatial rod structure and built as a model by soldering metal rods. During the closing event the load bearing behaviour of all models will be tested until failure. Traditionally, students of civil engineering of all semesters are invited to participate. Students of other fields of study are welcome to register as well. Interdisciplinary groups of participants (e.g. civil engineering and architecture) are also welcome. All building materials and the necessary equipment are provided free of charge.
